Must Every Teacher Undergo a DBS Check?

Because teachers are entrusted with the care and supervision of some of society’s most vulnerable members, it is crucial that the character of the teacher be beyond reproach. This type of DBS Check is required for anyone engaging in regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults.
A Closer Look at the Enhanced DBS Check with Barred List
The Enhanced DBS Check with Barred List is the most rigorous form of background check conducted by the Disclosure and Barring Service. It has evolved from the CRB Check of old and come to include provisions for checking an individual against government-maintained lists of those barred from certain activities. These individuals wound up on these lists by way of past behaviour.
What Does an Enhanced DBS Check Entail?
The Enhanced DBS Check looks for both spent and unspent convictions, as well as any official reprimands, warnings or cautions issued by law enforcement against an individual. What is a Barred List Check?

The Barred List Check is only applicable to those performing a regulated activity with members of these groups. What is the Time Limit on Barred Lists?
Individuals who feel they should no longer be included on a Barred List may request a review of their status after certain periods of time, depending on how old they were at the time of their offence. For instance, if they were less than 18 years old, they may appeal their Barred List status after 1 year. But if they were 25 or over at the time of their offence, they may not appeal their status for at least 10 years.
How Does a Teacher Apply for a DBS Check?
The teaching candidate cannot apply on their own behalf for this type of Enhanced DBS Check. Only the potential employer may apply for this check. Once the school or other institution has submitted the application on behalf of the aspiring teacher and a DBS certificate has been issued, a copy will be mailed to the candidate at the address supplied on the application.
How Long Does an Enhanced DBS Check Take?
Because it is the most thorough of DBS Checks and because it entails cooperation from the police, it may take 6-8 weeks to complete an Enhanced DBS Check with Barred List. In addition, if there were any discrepancies uncovered along the way, such as gaps in the address history, then it may take longer still. Or the application may be rejected outright.
Can I Use a Single DBS Check to Apply for Multiple Jobs?
The only scenario under which a DBS Check may be transferable would be if both positions applied for were identical in their scope and responsibilities. Even so, some schools or learning institutions may have guidelines or regulations in place stating that each applicant must make a fresh DBS application. Regardless of whether or not another DBS certificate was just recently issued for an identical position somewhere else.
